YOGA IS AN EXPLORATION of perspective. On a physical level, we are twisting and turning our body in ways that literally help us see things from new angles—such as with our feet over our head instead of on the ground.

On a deeper level, we are expanding our idea of who we are. We’re developing the part of us that can step back, observe the current situation, and see the broader picture. We do this by understanding the difference between our subjective and objective reality. Our subjective reality informs what we like, our desires and preferences. Our friend just painted her bedroom yellow, and we think it’s ugly. But our objective reality is based on fact and truth—the room is just yellow.

When we can differentiate between our objective and subjective realities, we begin to break from limiting thoughts and behaviors. We’re less reactionary with our emotions. Instead, we use our thoughts and feelings to proactively address potential problems and build relationships, including the one with ourselves. As we gain the ability to see reality objectively, we come to understand that all of our experiences were necessary for making us the person we are today.
